then asked whether the whole or a distinct part could be
entrusted to the Colony to support. In reply to this it
was stated that the Royal Flying Corps Hospital was estab-
lished at No. 37, Bryanston Square; that the cost of upkeep
was about £75 a week; and that it was "impracticable either
to hand over the whole to Hongkong to support or to divide
it".
That was on the 11th April, At this time no
mention had been made of the amount which your Committee
proposed to contribute and it is not difficult to understand
*
that it was regarded as impracticable to divide a hospital
constituted on so small a scale. When, however, in the
telegram dated the 2nd May, you offered to contribute £10,000
a year, you made it practicable to enlarge the Hospital and to entrust a distinct part to the Colony to support. From
the conditions accompanying this offer it seemed to us that you had still hoped the War Office would in consequence
acquiesce in this but, when we received your telegram of the
15th June telling us that we were to represent you on he
Hospital Committee and instructing us to communicate with
the Colonial Office, we did not know the precise terms
in which your offer had been accepted.
